Emo Sundaes, pulp sculptures, interactive ecosystems and more
1. We have long been fans of the Los Angeles-based artist Joshua Abarbanel, which I recently started following on “The Gram”. There is something fascinating about his intricate, layered, laser-cut wood carvings that captivate. See more of his work inspired by nature here. One of his latest pieces, Hull 04 (above) introduces a new material: pulped paper. He says:
“The onset of the pandemic crystallized something that I had struggled with for some time: feeling inundated and guilty about the large amounts of paper and packaging materials that permeate our daily lives. This problem has become increasingly evident as quarantine restrictions have created a situation where online has spoofed in-store purchases. Hull 04 is starting to address my concerns about privacy, consumerism, consumption and sustainability. The basis of this piece is the contents of old tax files that I have shredded and crushed into pulp. All the frills on the top are made of die-cut cardboard packaging material and my household product packaging. Hulls, as shapes and ideas, refer to survival, escape and regeneration.
